Values
Like other Greens, I think policy should be based on
values. The ten key values form the basis of all
Green policy:
- Ecological wisdom: we must protect and nurture our natural
and human ecology.
For example: public stewardship of the Mahomet aquifer. - Social justice and equal opportunity:
a just society does not discriminate on
the basis of class, gender, race, citizenship,
age, sexual orientation, disability, or belief.
For example: a county Citizen's Police Review Board. - Grassroots democracy: people must be involved
in the decisions that affect them.
For example: open meetings. - Nonviolence: war and violence are problems,
not solutions.
For example: opposing not just the war in Iraq, but also the so-called "War on Terror". - Decentralization: power should belong to the
many, not to the few.
For example: instant runoff voting, to allow third parties and independents to run without "spoiling" elections. - Community-based economics: sustaining a strong
local economy.
For example: curbing sprawl to encourage infill development and save energy. - Feminism: cooperation and compassion, not
domination and control, should guide our policies.
For example: community policing. - Respect for diversity: our differences
make us who we are.
For example: legalizing same-sex marriage. - Personal and global responsibility: our
choices affect the world.
For example: community-scale renewable energy. - Sustainability: planning for a future
that will outlast cheap oil.
For example: incentives for local organic farming.
